Chestertown, MD – October 10, 2025 — World Homelessness Day is recognized internationally as a day to raise awareness about the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness, promote local action, and honor efforts to alleviate suffering and prevent loss of life due to housing insecurity.

Across the globe, the day encourages communities to reflect on the realities of homelessness and to champion the work being done to provide safe shelter, supportive services, and pathways to stability.

Local Action, Lasting Impact

In Kent County, The Shelter Alliance continues its mission to establish a year-round, low-barrier shelter offering wraparound services that help individuals transition from crisis to self-sufficiency. The organization’s vision includes accessible shelter with proximity to mental health care, substance use support, and community-based resources that empower individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity.

With growing collaboration between local and state leaders, The Shelter Alliance is moving steadily toward making this vision a reality.

This year marks the second consecutive proclamation recognizing World Homelessness Day, issued by Chestertown Town Hall, following the inaugural proclamation by the Kent County Commissioners in 2024.

These proclamations highlight the ongoing commitment within Kent County to addressing homelessness and underscore the shared dedication between The Shelter Alliance, community partners, and local officials to provide shelter and stability for those in need.

The Shelter Alliance is also receiving valuable support from state leadership, including Jake Day, Maryland Secretary of Housing and Community Development, and Rebecca Flora, Maryland Secretary of Planning. Both have expressed their commitment to assisting with technical guidance and identifying funding opportunities to accelerate the development of Kent County’s first year-round shelter.

Looking Ahead: Building, Expanding, and Engaging

As The Shelter Alliance moves through its planning, budgeting, and expansion phase, Executive Director Dr. Kimrose Goodall shared that the organization is eager to keep the community informed and engaged through new initiatives.

“Obtaining a year-round shelter will allow us to reach our goal in ways emergency housing cannot,” Dr. Goodall said. “It’s not only about providing a place to sleep. It’s about providing hope, stability, and a path forward.”

On this year’s World Homelessness Day, The Shelter Alliance proudly launches its new website and monthly newsletter, designed to keep residents, partners, and supporters connected to the organization’s progress and upcoming opportunities for involvement.
