“My two sons and I became homeless due to having a very large electric bill. The apartment we were living in required that the utilities stay on but then our electric was disconnected. I had no income at the time so I could not pay the bill and we had to leave so we ended up in a shelter.
Life was hard before we got our apartment. Just everyday not knowing if we would have to be outside walking or sleeping on the streets. We were in a shelter but my kids were still afraid of what each day would bring. My youngest would always ask ‘when can we go home?’ My oldest needed somewhere to be stable and wanted to get a job.
While we were at the shelter we were able to get our medical needs taken care of. I got help with my disability claim but then we had to leave the shelter and really had nowhere to go until we got the help from The Shelter Alliance. Working with our case manager saved us. We were able to get into a motel while we worked together to get into our new apartment.
Our life now is wonderful. My youngest is in a new school and loves going everyday. He has a lot of new friends and our family gets to visit any time. My older son has less anxiety but has a good job. With the help of The Shelter Alliance he was able to go to a driving school and got his license.
Living here and now having my disability benefits makes our lives calmer because we don’t have to have the worry. The Shelter Alliance continued to help with everything: budget, food, clothing, and furniture. We would never know where we would be now without them.
Our greatest success was getting this apartment and being able to keep it without a struggle. Where we live is so peaceful with great neighbors…it’s the best. I wasn’t sure at first about keeping up with everything but it was easier knowing that I had The Shelter Alliance working with me.
I am looking forward to watching my children grow and thrive and I want to do what I can to help The Shelter Alliance grow too because the need is great amongst the homeless community and it needs to be addressed. I want to help them become better like myself and be a part of the community that can contribute.”
